Shortcuts to Make Upgrading Your BiteFX V2 Software to V2.5 Go Even Faster

Posted by Stuart Harman on Fri, Mar 17, 2017 @ 18:03 PM

From the desk of Stu Harman, our support and coaching expert. In this article Stu explains how you can expedite upgrading multiple installations of BiteFX V2 for Windows software to BiteFX V2.5 using two different shortcuts that will save you time!

Upgrading your installed V2.4 software to V2.5 has been set up to use the same updating process that is normally used to add new animations, pictures and minor software changes on a fairly frequent basis. Once the BiteFX software has been updated to V2.4, two additional updates are added sequentially, which ultimately downloads and saves the V2.5 installer file. That installer file is what's needed to upgrade your BiteFX V2.4 software to the V2.5 version.

We're going to explain how you can download that installer file just once, and then use it to finish upgrading the rest of your BiteFX software without having the repeat that download process for every other BiteFX in your office.

Shortcut #1 - Download the V2.5 Installer File Directly from the Member Area

Rather than using the updating process to get to the download step, you can download it manually yourself as follows:

  1. Click on this link, to navigate to our home page.
  2. Click on the Members tab.
  3. Login using your email and password where indicated. If you can't remember your password, click on "Forgotten passsword or new Member?". An email will be sent to you with a secure link that allows you to change your password to something more preferable.
  4. In the Online Support section in the right column, click on "Software Download".

  5. Now click on the "BiteFx on Windows" link to begin the download. Note: If using Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer, be sure to select Save!

  6. Once you have the installer file saved on your local computer, you can copy it to a shared location (i.e. your server) so you can upgrade the rest of your computers from file in that shared location. Proceeed to Copy the Saved BiteFX V2.5 Installer File for the rest of the steps to upgrade the rest of your BiteFX software (alternatively, you can copy the installer file onto a USB flash drive and plug it into the other computers to install BiteFX V2.5 from there - click on the following link to see our blog article - How to Use a USB Flash Drive to Install BiteFX on Multiple Computers).

Shortcut #2 - Update / Upgrade one BiteFX Computer to Download the Installer File

This second shortcut requires you to run the update program on just one of your BiteFX software installations and then upgrade it. Once the installer file has been saved by that first computer, running the update program on each subsequent computer to obtain that same installer file is redundant and an unnecessary use of your valuable time (although there is no harm in doing it that way).

Overview of the Steps for Shortcut #2

  1. Update and Upgrade BiteFX V2.4 to V2.5 on the First Computer.
  2. Unhide the ProgramData Folder.
  3. Copy the Saved V2.5 Installer File.
  4. Paste the Copied Installer File Into a Shared Network Location.
  5. Upgrade Your Remaining BiteFX Software.

The following is a detailed, step-by-step guide how to do it.

Update and Upgrade BiteFX V2.4 to V2.5 on the First Computer

  1. Make sure that BiteFX has been updated through Update #53. If not, run the uodate program as needed until #53 has been installed (see Updating Your BiteFX V2 Software for Windows).
  2. Start BiteFX; download and install Update #54.
  3. Re-start BiteFX; download and install Update #55.
  4. Re-start BiteFX - a dialog will appear advising that an Upgrade is available. Click on "Yes" to proceed.
  5. The BiteFX Setup Wizard dialog will appear. Follow the prompts to install BiteFX V2.5 over your existing V2.4 software.

Unhide the ProgramData Folder

When you upgraded the first computer, the Installer File BiteFX 2.5.xx.msi was saved in a hidden folder named "ProgramData".  You will need to be able to reveal that hidden folder in your directory list so you can copy the installer file to a shared drive, where it can then be accessed by the rest of your BiteFX computers,
  1. For Windows 7 & 8:
    1. Click on the Windows/File Explorer folder icon in your Taskbar at the bottom of your computer monitor.

Paste the Copied Installer File into a Shared Network Location

  1. After copying the installer file, open the shared network directory in which you've decided to save the installer file (you may want to first create a subfolder in there named "BiteFX Installation File" to copy the file into so you can find it easily).

  2. Right-click in the directory or folder and select "Paste" from the drop-down menu.

  1. The installer file will be copied into the directory or folder.

Upgrade Your Remaining BiteFX Software

Now that you have saved the installer file into a shared location that the other BiteFX computers can open, you can upgrade the rest of your BiteFX software installations by simply double-clicking on the installer file name, BiteFX 2.5.xx.msi. This will start the BiteFX Setup Wizard, bypassing the unnecessary updating steps you only needed to perform with the first computer.
