Core Concepts for Your Practice
The concepts Dr. Dawson tackles in his book, “Functional Occlusion”, are simultaneously highly influential (and profitable), and may have the potential to change your view of dentistry. So approach with caution! The knowledge, once gained, is hard to ignore.
From the first exam to the end of the treatment process, your patient's will be receiving an experience unlike any that they have had with their previous doctors.
Therefore it is important to be sure you take to heart these ideas and understand them to the best of your ability.
Better (Visual) Comprehension
Many of the concepts described concern a dynamic system – how the jaw moves, how the disc behaves in the TMJ, which muscles fire at which stages of the motions, how these factors affect the teeth, how the teeth grow into place, how things change when there is dysfunction.
All these motions are difficult to describe in, and difficult to pick up from, static printed pages.
Animations have the advantage of giving you a different perspective on these concepts whether they are new to you or not. The visual mapping they provide can help you pick up on cues and connect ideas that may not have seemed immediately related at first glance.
