3. Stable: Positioning Muscles

Opening/closing motion focusing on the lateral pterygoid muscles.

Purposes

  • Functioning of lateral pterygoids.
  • Shapes and position of the condyle, fossa, posterior attachments, muscle attachments and bony eminence and disc which comprise the TMJ assembly.
  • Seating in biconcave articular disc
  • Protrusive motion of a healthy jaw and disc.
  • Coordinated activity of the upper and lower pterygoid muscles.

Each animation includes supporting photos and is equipped with detailed clinical notes

Presenting

  • Help the client see how the jaw is positioned as far upwards as possible in a closed bite (centric relation) and the positioning muscles are not contracting.
  • Demonstrate the functions of the lower lateral pterygoid contracting to move the jaw forward and the upper lateral pterygoid contracting to hold the disc forward as the jaw fully seats in centric relation.
  • Show that only when the jaw fully seats in centric relation do the muscles shut off and create neuromuscular peace.
