Animation - Recession and Gingiva
Do many patients know what the hygienist is doing when teeth are probed and measurements called out?
What happens when gum and bone recede?
In this month's update animation we show advancing gum and bone recession and how that can lead to the attached gingiva becoming unattached so there is nothing to stop the probe, or food particles, getting behind the mucosa.

The animation starts with a healthy state (image 1) then shows the gum and bone receding (image 2), caused by movement in the tooth (image 3), with the recession developing quite far (image 4) and finally to the point where there is no longer any attached gingiva and the probe has nothing in its way (image 5).
Thank you to doctors Scott Munro, Don Reid, Robin Steely, and Joseph Grapevine for requesting this animation and giving input to the development.
